School Team Sailing Selection Series
Kate Gostlow, Thursday, 26 April 2012
The final School Team Sailing Selection Series was run at Albert Park Lake by Yachting Victoria with the assistance of Albert Sailing Club and the Boatshed on Saturday the 21st of April. The event included all Gold Fleet teams from the State Championships that were able to attend. Mentone Grammar was not required to attend as they had won selection through winning of the State championships and the John Middleton Trophy.
The schools who attended where;
Haileybry
The Peninsula School
St Leonard's
Geelong Grammar
St Michael's
It would have been unfair to discard the results of the Championships, so where teams last raced each other in the Gold fleet knockout finals, those results were the results for the selection series and those races were not re sailed. Haileybury was eliminated in the first round of the championship knockout and in a display of sportsmanship they agreed to forfeit a race win in the selection series, as the team that beat them did not enter the series.
Their confidence was well placed with Haileybry being undefeated on the day.
Peninsula was 2nd winning the tie break D4.2(a) against St Leonard's who paced 3rd.
Geelong was 4th winning the tie break D4.2(a) against St Michael's.
So, Mentone Grammar, Haileybury College and The Peninsula School have been invited to join Vic Team 12 and ensuring guaranteed entry to the Nationals.
St Leonard's and Geelong have also been invited to join the team and enter the Nationals, though will need to wait for Yachting Australia to accept their entry.
In the interim, Yachting Victoria School Team Sailing has formed Vic Team 12 which comprises our selected schools who will jointly train and develop their skills so that Victoria achieves the best result we're capable of.
