Update on Winter Activities and Renewal of Membership 2012/13 Season

Peter King, Tuesday, 26 June 2012

Dear Members.

We are currently in the midst of Winter but already your Committee has been active on a number of fronts. Planning has commenced for the calendar of events for next season. Meaghan and Rohan have attended a Yachting Victoria evening for Training Principals. On Thursday 21st June, Ashley, Rod Caddaye, Meaghan Densley and yours truly ventured down through the rains to Safety Beach to hear from Yachting Victoria. This year there is a new campaign being launched to promote sailing. We have had Go Sailing, now we have "Discover Sailing". The campaign follows research commissioned by Yachting Australia. The Gemba report examined the public's perceptions of sailing and the reasons and barriers to sailing.

On the redevelopment front Ashley,Rohan and myself have had a couple of meetings. There have been minor changes to the floor plan to accommodate a disability change area and a decision was made to have paving in the yard rather than wooden sleepers. A meeting was held with Economic Development manager Jason Sharp. This meeting was to look at the operating models for the Club and its tenants. Apart from the capital cost of the development we raised the issue of the ongoing operational and maintenance costs. The Club provided Jason with a number of options all of which involve risks and costs - mainly to the Council. The Club is keen to have an arrangement that protects its income stream for functions and its ability to control events and activities and events that relate to sailing. At present we feel that there has been slippage in the timing of the development. In February we were promised October 2012 with a finish in December 2013; at present its more likely to commence March/April 2013 and finish sometime in 2014. Ashley has stressed to Council that the Club does not want to miss 2 seasons.

Next Season will see a number of changes in the number and types of activity for members. We will also be looking at a new points system to encourage participation and development amongst the membership. Membership fees for the 2012/13 season are due from the 31st August, 2012. This year I would like to request members to download a copy of the membership/renewal forms from the Clubs' Website. Membership and Boat Storage forms are located within the "Club Info" membership area of the website. If renewals have not been received from members by the end of July these will be posted.
